Drowning.

Drowning. Oil on Canvas 20x24 December 2023 I read a poem a while ago that said depression felt like sitting in a warm bath when suddenly someone pulls the drain and you are left shivering in a cold, empty bathtub. The irony of this piece being titled “drowning” is that there is no water in the tub. Instead it is meant to depict the psychological state of abandoning the search for air in a vast sea of despair, becoming submersed in despondency. In isolation you are left with your thoughts until they eventually fade out into eerie silence. Living with chronic depression is viewing the world through an unsaturated lens. This simple composition and monochromatic palette evoke complex emotion and reflection. The voyeuristic element of the viewing experience is meant to conjure both discomfort and solace. This was a challenging piece to work on, both artistically and emotionally. I hope you can appreciate my execution of a dark subject matter.
